I fully understand the fears which many people have about masts sited near their homes, schools or places of work. The Conservatives did a deal with the phone companies when they were in government to cut planning controls for masts, and now we have the ridiculous situation that it is often easier to get planning permission for a mast than it is for a conservatory.

Conservatives in Essex are reluctant to sign up to the green agenda. On 10 October the Essex County Council ruling group initially refused to accept a motion calling on the council to sign the Nottingham Declaration which commits the council to action on climate change. The Tories also failed to commit to publishing an action plan, within a year, stating their proposals for dealing with climate change and cutting CO2 emissions.
