Learning disability care slammed

A health trust has been heavily criticised for "institutional abuse" of people with learning disabilities. The Healthcare Commission, which carried out the review at Sutton and Merton Primary Care Trust (PCT), said care was "simply not acceptable". It is the second report in six months to highlight neglect of people with learning difficulties.

Surrey's waste being tipped in Epsom

The extent of domestic waste from outside the Borough being brought to Epsom's waste site has outraged Town ward councillors. Figures for the last 9 months show that for every 100 tonnes of local waste, another 160 tonnes is added from other parts of Surrey. Lib Dem Cllr Julie Morris is horrified that over 60% of the Juggernauts and Dust-carts coming down Hook Road to the refuse site on Blenheim Road are not necessary for handling local waste. "Why should Epsom's narrow residential roads suffer from extra lorries bringing waste from Tandridge, Reigate & Banstead, Mole Valley and Elmbridge?" she asked.

14-19 Diplomas Introduction Must Be Delayed

This morning in response to questions from Paul Holmes MP, Liberal Democrat Member of the Education and Skills Committee, 3 out of 4 expert witnesses called for a year's delay in the introduction of the new 14-19 Diplomas which are scheduled to begin in 2008. This followed evidence of major concerns over the speed at which such a major and radical set of new courses were being introduced. Paul Holmes MP commented:
