Tomorrow morning I'll be at the Harpur Centre to open the Bedford Poppy Shop. The Poppy Shop is of course staffed by volunteers, and gives you the chance to pop in, have a look inside and make a donation to the appeal, which supports the Royal British Legion's excellent work in providing welfare to those men and women who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces. The store can be found near Argos, so please do pop along over the next few weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

Wiltshire Council is to abandon the local system for rating establishments selling food in favour of a scheme administered by a national quango. The council was given £42,000 by the Food Standards Agency as a sweetener to make the switch.
Councillors in Glasgow have agreed a motion supporting Scottish Government proposals to allow equal marriage. Glasgow is believed to be the first council in Scotland to back the proposals for a change in the law.The motion, proposed by Liberal Democrat Councillor Alex Dingwall, was agreed unanimously at a meeting of the full council today (Thursday, 27 October 2011). The council will now respond to the Scottish Government's consultation on same sex marriage and religious ceremonies for civil partnerships.
