Second homes should be controlled

A leading Devon Liberal Democrat has called for controls on second homes in the County. Richard Younger-Ross who is seeking to regain the Newton Abbot parliamentary seat next year has called for second homes to require planning consent. Speaking in the Affordable Homes debate at the Liberal Democrats conference in Glasgow, Mr Younger-Ross claimed that second home ownership was forcing local people out of villages and was forcing up the price of property in the rural areas and seaside resorts. Richard Younger-Ross who is a Lib Dem County Councillor says that in many villages the life has been sucked out, with second homes left empty for most of the year. "Young people can not afford to buy or rent in many villages and essential workers face long commutes to work because of the lack of affordable homes close to there work. Bedford Western Bypass: Lib Dem Mayor Dave Appoints Contractor with Work to Start "Within Weeks"

Liberal Democrat Mayor Dave Hodgson has signed the decision to appoint the contractor to construct the crucial final phase of the Bedford Western Bypass. Work will start on site within weeks. Breheny Civil Engineering were appointed to carry out the £18.6 million project to complete a route which was first planned over fifty years ago and won the tender on both quality and price. The project was finally able to go ahead after Mayor Dave Hodgson used Compulsory Purchase Orders to remove a series of obstacles blocking the building of the new road.

The benefits of Coalition 2010-14

The Journal uses its leader column (6/10/14) to argue, not entirely consistently, that the Lib Dems were right to go into coalition with the Conservatives in 2010, given the electoral arithmetic, but that they should not contemplate coalition next time.
