Liberal Democrats Leader Nick Clegg has added his support to the Human Rights Day 2009. Commenting, he said "Human Rights Day is a time for all people to reflect on the importance of stamping out discrimination, hate and cruel behaviour around the world."
Despite a big swing from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives held onto the Hythe West seat in the Hythe Town Council by-election. The by-election was caused by the resignation of Conservative Councillor Richard Carroll, elected in May 2007.
Road users in around Shropshire are being punished by the Government's decision to increase the rateable values applied to petrol stations, according to Cllr Heather Kidd. Heather has warned that rural petrol stations could face closure unless the Government reverses their decision.
Liberal Democrat Andy Gerard has been elected as the new Councillor for Kingsbrook Ward. He achieved an emphatic victory in yesterday's by-election, with Labour and the Tories a long way back in second and third place respectively. The Liberal Democrats' share of the vote increased, while on a dreadful night for the Conservatives, their vote share fell by 7.5%.
