G8 Leaders agree compromise deal on Climate Change

Leaders of the G8 nations have agreed to a compromise deal on tackling climate change, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said. "We agreed... that CO2 emissions must first be stopped and then followed by substantial reductions," she said. Reports said the leaders had agreed to hold talks on a replacement to the Kyoto Protocol within a UN framework. The G8 today agreed to 'discuss' targets to cut emissions by 50% by 2050.

Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill in the Lords

The House of Lords is due to vote on the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill later this month. Having initially insisted that it was a matter 'for Parliament to decide', both Gordon Brown and David Cameron are now saying they oppose the Bill 'in its current form', adding to the ongoing strong Liberal Democrat opposition to the bill.

Remembering Alan Turing

The Liberal Democrats are calling for the House of Commons to remember the gay cryptographer Alan Turing tomorrow, on the 53rd anniversary of his death. He is famous for having invented the Turing machine and been key to cracking the German Enigma code during World War Two, but was found dead after being convicted of having a sexual relationship with another man.
