Supermarket plans thrown out

Following a lengthy debate, punctuated by interjections from a packed public gallery, Epsom & Ewell's planning committee have voted to reject the controversial proposal for a large supermarket in the Upper High Street on a majority decision. As for all planning applications, this proposal had to be determined purely on planning grounds, despite immense public interest and pressure. Council planning officers had recommended approval, but most members felt that the size of the planned store would create more additional traffic than that part of the town could cope with.

Lib Dems launch green tax policies

The Liberal Democrats have launched a green taxation paper called "The Green Switch" which is aimed at curbing carbon emissions and halting global warming. Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said: "We want fairer and greener taxes, but not higher taxes. Green taxes can change our behaviour and safeguard our planet for our children in a way that hugging a husky cannot. This is about using taxes in a new way to change behaviour, not to raise money for the Government. Tory hot air will not cool the climate, while Labour is missing targets and ducking decisions. The Green Switch is about shifting taxes from good things, such as work, onto bad things, such as gas-guzzling cars and half-full flights that cause wasteful carbon emissions."

Consultation Ordered on Shepway School Closures

A report proposing the merger of Harcourt and Morehall Primary Schools and closure of Selsted CE Primary School has been presented to the School Organisation Advisory Board (SOAB) by the Area Education officer today. SOAB members have voted to put the report out to public consultation.

ALDE condemns homophobia and calls for better EU anti-discrimination laws

Marking International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO), the European Parliament organised a hearing yesterday, which included both victims and experts to tackle the rise in homophobia. Several Members of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats - the EU Parliament group of which the Liberal Democrats are the UK member - took active part in this event.
