In a further step to improve community safety the local MP Chris Huhne has presented West End's two recently appointed Police Community Support Officers with two new bicycles. He met with the officers Ed Pritt and Michelle Towle plus local PC Gavin Smith. These have been funded by the Eastleigh Community Safety Partnership and Partnership Manager, Peter Baldry, from Eastleigh Borough Council believes they will be of great benefit to the local community.

Lib Dems oppose Blair's nuclear weapons plan

The Prime Minister outlined plans to build a new generation of submarines to carry Trident missiles. He said submarine numbers may be cut from four to three, while the number of nuclear warheads will be cut by 20%. A number of Labour MPs oppose the plan, but the Tories say it would be "crazy" not to have UK nuclear weapons. The Lib Dems want a decision put back to 2014.

Civil Partnerships: first anniversaries

Official figures show that same-sex couples have registered 15,672 civil partnerships formed in the UK between December 2005 and the end of September 2006. The initial burst of 2,000 in the first month has reduced to around 1,500 ceremonies a month, so after the first twelve months around 36,000 people will have had their relationship formally recognised.
