New Kendal hospital backing urged by Lakes MP

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has asked the Government to back a new hub hospital for Morecambe Bay, south of Kendal. Questioning health ministers on the floor of the House yesterday, Tim outlined one of the options put forwards by clinicians as part of the current hospitals review, and asked the Government for capital funding to make it a reality.

MP asks government to look again at flood funding

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on the government to review funding for flood relief schemes. His call follows warnings by the NFU that new Government plans to maintain waterways are inadequately funded and leave many areas vulnerable to flooding.

Trehaverne by-election announced

A Truro City Council by-election has been announced in Trehaverne Ward, to be held on 5th December. This is a result of the resignation of Cllr Joe Taylor, who is going to concentrate on his charity work. (See further details of Joe's resignation here.) Fortunately, we have a good prospective candidate in Bridget Andrews, who is a nurse at Treliske.

Chesterfield: Local Libdems lead charge to save local pubs

Local residents in Chesterfield will be aware of recent attempts by larger supermarkets to take away community autonomy and drive through their application to turn underused pubs into supermarkets. In at least one area of town this has been of great benefit, but the opinion of councillors is that this move is not necessarily entirely altruistic. It is refreshing therefore to see our local politicians attempting to redress this balance in our planning laws.

MP calls on residents to back Fibre GarDen project

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has congratulated a community broadband scheme in Garsdale for reaching the half-way mark in raising the cash they need from a share issue. The company are offering superfast broadband to the community and Tim has called on people to keep buying shares.

Greener Journeys Back to Work

An old news report from before Christmas has just caught my eye. Greener Journeys - a campaign to promote greener travel - was set up in 2009 by Arriva, FirstGroup, Go-Ahead and Stagecoach. In January 2013 some 80,000 unemployed jobseekers were offered free bus travel for the month. The scheme covered holders of a JobCentre Plus Travel Discount Card. Those eligible for this card are people claiming JobSeekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment & Support Allowance or Income Support and who are actively engaged with a JobCentre Plus advisor. So, well done to those bus companies for helping to set up Greener Journeys.
