The sheer quantity of raw sewage being dumped into Britain’s rivers and coastal areas is a scandal and a disgrace.
I was delighted to help formally mark the completion of the renovated Church Arcade in the town centre yesterday. The £350,000 project, which saw the Council working with the arcade's owner Metropolitan and County Group to in the design of the scheme, has really brightened up the arcade and made it a light, attractive place to shop. In a nice touch, the new canopy over the arcade entrance from Harpur Street has the names of a number of Bedford Sporting icons.
The Conservative administration at County Hall has today announced cuts to the County Council's budget. Responding to the allocation of the cuts, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat main opposition group, Cllr Hazel Watson said: "I disagree with the allocation of the cuts by the Conservative administration. The £3.9m cut to front-line services for Children and Young people is excessive. This will be very damaging to services for vulnerable children and young people in Surrey. It was only about two years ago that children's services were rated inadequate by Government and these cuts will not help to improve the service."
Three soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles have been killed in Afghanistan after a "renegade" Afghan soldier turned and opened fire on them. Other soldiers are reported to be injured. The 1st Battalion have been based in Shorncliffe barracks on the Folkestone / Sandgate border since 2000.
Kent County Council have announced that they have finished the short-listing process of the companies who expressed an interest in the core highways maintenance contract. The core maintenance contract is currently provided in partnership with Ringway, and was put out to tender a few months ago.
