News in the Mail on Sunday that 51% of us would now vote to leave the EU is more than disappointing to those of us who believe the UK is, on balance, probably better off within it as it currently stands. It is downright worrying.

9 out of 10 diesel cars failing to meet EU pollution limits
9 out of 10 new diesel cars are failing to meet EU air pollution limits, according to a report published today by sustainable transport group Transport & Environment. This is due to manufacturers testing their new vehicles in laboratory conditions which do not reflect actual emissions of pollutants on the road. The research found that on average diesel cars in the EU are producing emissions about five times higher than the permitted limit.

Liberal Democrats ask West Berkshire Council to reconsider new policy on Home to School Transport
The West Berkshire Council Executive decided to bring in a new policy on Home to School Transport at its meeting on 10th September. The new policy means that secondary pupils whose catchment school is not their nearest school will no longer get free home to school transport. Alan Macro, Lib Dem leader on the Council commented "we think that this change is very unfair for the affected parents and we want the decision to be "called in" for review by the Council's Overview and Scrutiny Commission. The Commission has the power to ask the Executive to change its mind. Because of the Council's rules, we will need to get some Conservative councillors to agree to our request."

EU court ruling: Jobless EU migrants can be barred from unemployment benefits
The European of Court Justice has confirmed that jobless EU migrants can be barred from unemployment benefits without breaking the principle of equal treatment. The judgement related to the case of a Swedish national, Nazifa Alimanovic, and her three children, who lived in Germany. Ms Alimanovic and her family had their social security benefits cut off after she and her eldest daughter stopped working.
