His by-election victory not only saw a 16% swing from New Labour to the Liberal Democrats, it also saw David Cameron's Conservatives retain fourth place with a swing of 9% from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats.

At the start of this campaign, many political commentators thought that the Liberal Democrats would be fighting to retain the second place that they narrowly gained over the SNP in 2005 - or even fighting to stay ahead of the Conservatives. The result was a sensational Liberal Democrat victory.
Liberal Democrat County Councillors for Guildford, Sarah Di Caprio, David Goodwin, Eddie Owen, Pauline Searle and Fiona White joined together to send a letter to the Surrey Advertiser which was published today [10th Feb] informing Surrey's residents of Surrey County Council's Conservative run Executive's disregard for the processes of democracy.
Last night's result in the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election, comes as an added boost to Bedford & Kempston Lib Dems in their progress towards winning next time in Bedford & Kempston.
Despite the eloquent pleas of a member of the public representing the parents of children attending the St Martin's pre-school playgroup, EEBC's Planning Committee voted to reject a proposal for refusal made by Cllr Colin Taylor and seconded by Cllr Nigel Pavey (both Lib Dem).
