The sheer quantity of raw sewage being dumped into Britain’s rivers and coastal areas is a scandal and a disgrace.
Lynne Featherstone MP, Lib Dem spokesperson on Equality, gave a keynote speech to the main conference hall today at the Liberal Democrat Conference in Bournemouth. She said:
In the last eight weeks, 28 British soldiers and Royal Marines have been killed in Afghanistan. However easy it may be to forget, we are a nation at war. Already more than 75,000 British men and women have done tours of duty in Afghanistan.
Heather Kidd interrupted her busy schedule at the Liberal Democrat annual conference to take some time out with new constituency organiser Adam Pollard. It is the first time that Adam has been to the hustle and bustle of the annual conference and he has worked tirelessly catching up on the many activities and events.
A high speed rail link was described as "vital for the prosperity of the North East" by MEP Fiona Hall at the Lib Dem party conference in Bournemouth.
Liberal Democrats have noted with concern the more aggressive approach to protest recently adopted by the police, notably the treatment of demonstrators at Kingsnorth power station in Kent in August 2008 and at the G20 demonstrations in the City of London in April 2009; and the pre-emptive arrest of 114 environmental protesters in Nottinghamshire also in April 2009.
Afghanistan: Pauline Jenkins, Lib Dem PPC for Newark, was interviewed at Conference by the British Forces Network asking he whether or not the UK should withdraw troops. Pauline said the UK has to have a very clear exit strategy agreed with the many nations which have troops in Afghanistan now.
