Should WC invest in the smoking industry?

The BBC has reported that many councils including Wiltshire are hoping to make money from smoking by investing in the industry. However whilst the financial arm of the council has put £1,100,000 into promoting smoking the public health division, which is the responsibility of corporate director Maggie Rae, is supposed to be encouraging smokers to give up.

Energy Company Obligation

Liberal Democrats in government are forcing energy companies to help families cut their fuel bills. The 'Energy Company Obligation' will require energy companies to help people make their homes more energy efficient and to drive down the cost of energy by always offering people the cheapest tariff. Other help is also available.

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called for more support from the government and councils for credit unions.

Farron calls for more support for Credit Unions

Tim's call comes after a report was released this morning by think-tank Civitas. Civitas have suggested that credit unions should be allowed to take bigger deposits if they are to become a viable alternative to high-cost lenders. Credit unions are financial co-operatives that operate in local areas, offering small loans to members.

Liberal Democrats are leading the fight against Climate Change. We have created the biggest-ever home insulation scheme through our Green Deal, which offers loans for people to install energy efficiency measures in their homes. This will reduce the amount of energy they use and cut energy bills. It will also create 60,000 jobs and apprenticeships.
