The sheer quantity of raw sewage being dumped into Britain’s rivers and coastal areas is a scandal and a disgrace.
The UK faces a "lose-lose situation" unless workers who care for elderly parents are offered flexible working hours, the health secretary has said. Jeremy Hunt said an ageing population and a "dementia time bomb" meant helping carers stay in work was an "economic necessity" for the country. But he said too few employers currently offer carers flexible work options. Meanwhile, a report has warned England is facing a shortfall in the number of people able to give vital unpaid care.
Eating more fruit, particularly blueberries, apples and grapes, is linked to a reduced risk of developing type-2 diabetes, suggests a study in the British Medical Journal. Blueberries cut the risk by 26% compared with 2% for three servings of any whole fruit - but fruit juice did not appear to have the same effect. The research looked at the diets of more than 187,000 people in the US.
A project to improve broadband speeds around the Borough took another major step forward today when Bedford Borough Council and two neighbouring councils signed a new contract with BT Openreach which secures £2.6m of extra funding on top of over £6m of Government and local funding.

The Government has today [2 September] announced additional funding to provide free early years education to two-year olds across England. In Northamptonshire, the allocation will more than double the number of eligible children, from 1576 this year to 3800 in 2014.
