The Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that ONE Railway has contracted a Security company (MH Security) to provide security agents for Brentwood Station. The agents have been taken on to help improve passenger safety and reduce the number of groups congregating at the station after school and into the early evening. This is an additional initiative to work already being done in the area by the local police and PCSOs.
Cllr David Kendall, Brentwood Lib Dem Group Leader, has attacked the Conservatives running Essex County Council over their abject failure to finance highway repairs properly. Just a few weeks ago the Tories announced a £10 million overspend on the highways budget.
Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has expressed concern over news that the FBI is enlisting British law enforcement agencies to set up an international database containing the biometric details of thousands of people. The "Server in the Sky" programme would take cooperation between police forces way beyond the current faxing of fingerprints across the Atlantic. Allies in the "war against terror" - the US, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand - have formed a working group, the International Information Consortium, to plan their strategy.
Local MP Tim Farron has today called on the Government to ensure that those who are unable to receive the full spectrum of digital channels after the 'digital switchover' do not pay the full licence fee, and those who cannot receive a digital signal at all should get a full refund. In Whitehaven, the first area to switchover entirely residents have in some cases been unable to receive all of the channels.
