The start of another year and at least some improvement in the recycling service offered by our borough council as they continue to bring flats on-stream with the new collection service for plastics and cardboard. Each week we will be posting a "tip of the week", starting off with some fairly obvious strategies but moving on to some of the most inventive recycling done by our councillors, members and supporters. Let your local councillor know of any interesting ways of recycling which you think could be publicised more widely.
Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has welcomed plans by North Jesmond Lib Dem councillors to fund disability access improvements to Jesmond Library. The building has not been upgraded since it was built in the 1960s and is now not particularly accessible for people with limited mobility. Lib Dem councillors are proposing a £37,000 improvement programme funded from the local ward budget, and plans of the proposed improvements are on display.
British politics is obsessed with a silly row over whether the Conservative policy of "recognising marriage in the tax system" is affordable. This is an idiotic question. Anything is affordable if you are willing to raise taxes elsewhere or borrow to fund it.
Heather Kidd welcomed Nick Clegg's stated Liberal Democrat position on the possible outcome of the general election. Heather said "Nick has set the Liberal Democrat stall out impeccably showing that the Liberal Democrats are independent and will not be bought by any of the other political parties. Despite both Labour and Conservative's absurd pledges and approaches Nick has made it clear that a vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote for the Liberal Democrats and nobody else."
