Liberal Democrat Acting Leader boycotts state visit by Saudi King

Acting Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable is boycotting the state visit of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. Dr Cable has turned down an invite to a Buckingham Palace banquet in the King's honour, citing Saudi Arabia's poor human rights record, and the alleged corruption around the regime's arms deal with the British firm BAE.

Housing expert advises Lib Dem campaigners

Park Cllr Robin Lawrence and St Peter's candidate Zahid Shah went to meet Paul Holmes MP, the Lib Dem spokesman on housing. They told Mr Holmes about the difficulties tenants of Wolverhampton Homes in their wards were experiencing and he was able to give them useful advice.

ring road hermit

Wolverhampton's celebrity hermit has died.

Josef Stawinoga, a Polish war veteran, had lived in a tent in the middle Wolverhampton's ring road for more than 35 years. West Midlands Police confirmed the body of an 87-year-old man, named locally as Mr Stawinoga, was found in a tent on Sunday afternoon. The city council paid tribute to him saying he was part and parcel of life in the city for decades. If no next of kin or friends come forward to organise the funeral, the council will make the necessary arrangements.
