Strange Noises From the Public Gallery
August is traditionally the silly season in Politics. For Barnet this August was the very silly season. The antics of the Conservative Group dominated the headlines and monopolised the local blogs. I decided to let others get on with it. Tonight I propose my motion of no confidence in the Leader of the Council. More of that later in the week. Last night was back to school in the shape of the Business Management and Overview Committee. This is the committee that can call in certain decisions made by Cabinet and individual Cabinet Members. This is the forum you will recall where the former Leader admitted he knew nothing about the Icelandic deposits, and where a certain Cabinet Member admitted it was too upsetting to meet residents in sheltered housing. In short there is always some fun to be had and the odds of a cabinet member making a gaffe or two are about even money.

Barnet Lib Dems call for network of Borough wide 20mph speed zones
Barnet Liberal Democrats are campaigning for the Council to introduce 20mph speed limits throughout the Borough. Cllr Jack Cohen, Leader of the Lib Dem group, told a Council meeting on 14 September that Barnet has the second worst road traffic accident figures in the whole of Greater London. Recently released figures again shown that serious and fatal accidents in the Borough have increased. This contrasts sharply with reductions in most if not all of other London Boroughs.

Disabled children 'panic cuts' warning
Local authorities should refrain from "panic" cuts to services, charities for disabled children have warned. The Council for Disabled Children says some families are seeing "lifeline services" stopped with little warning. Losing services such as a few hours' respite break for parents can have a huge impact on families, it warns.

Inspectors claim that the term "special educational needs" is used too much.
Thousands of pupils are being wrongly labelled as having special educational needs when all they require is better teaching and support, Ofsted has said. It said up to 25% of the 1.7m pupils in England with special needs would not be so labelled if schools focused more on teaching for all their children. The National Union of Teachers said such claims were "insulting and wrong"

Banking Reform: two options for debate
ALTER has added a speaker on Bank of England Reform to the panel at its fringe on Saturday. Alongside Brian Hodgkinson, economist and author of "A New Model of the Economy", who will be answering 'yes' to the question in the event title "Does the Banking Crisis Strengthen the case for LCT?" will be Ben Dyson, a young Yorkshire-based financial sector entrepreneur who is campaigning on reform of the entire money-creation system. Ben's answer to our question is likely to be "Maybe"!

Tennis for Free Coach Receives Award
Local resident Jason Barnett has received an Award as Most Supportive Team Manager at the Surrey Youth Games held earlier this year. Unfortunately, the trophy donated by the Rotary Club of Epsom was not available until recently, so the official presentation was delayed until September 4th.
