Looking back at last weekend's River Festival, what a fantastic showcase it was for Bedford. It is estimated that over 300,000 people came out to join in the fun over the weekend. The arrival of the summer was excellently timed and no doubt encouraged many people to come out and enjoy the vast array of entertainment on offer.
In Chesterfield three schools will be opening their doors this summer to help some of the most disadvantaged pupils in our area with the big step up from primary to secondary school. Many pupils find the move to a bigger school and a more challenging curriculum daunting and this can lead to falling results and they often never catch up again. To help pupils who are especially vulnerable to falling behind, those on free school meals (FSM) or looked-after children, Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg launched the first Summer Schools programme this week. A senior local councillor has welcomed news that 3,700 two year olds in Derbyshire will benefit from early years education from September 2014.
A pioneering scheme to give young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEETs) opportunities to get back on track launched in the East Midlands region has been welcomed.

As promised, Liberal Democrat County Councillors have been working hard monitoring the impact of a Bus Review launched earlier in the year. The bus review that the County Council conducted was designed to achieve around £750,000 of savings from public transport. It was a cross party review but the Lib Dems on the panel insisted that the panel must be reconvened at a later date to discuss the results of the public consultation.
