Lib Dems condemn “chaotic and incompetent” budget
The sheer quantity of raw sewage being dumped into Britain’s rivers and coastal areas is a scandal and a disgrace.
The number of day-trip coaches bringing visitors to Chesterfield is increasing once again this year and is set to break the 500 a year mark for the very first time. When the Liberal Democrats came to power in Chesterfield in 2003 the yearly figure was only about 100. They replaced the disgrace of a Coach Station for the new modern facility we now have and mad many improvements to the town centre. They also worked hard on raising the profile of Chesterfield across the country, got Derbyshire playing cricket here again and introduced the very successful annual Arts and Markets Festival. This hard work is paying off year on year and the many more visitors who spend money here have helped Chesterfield survive better than most during the recession.
Official Chesterfield Borough Council reports show that the former Liberal Democrat Borough Council that lost power in the May elections, left the borough's finances in very good order indeed. Despite the general public being told by Labour politicians that the Liberal Democrats had 'spent all the money' the reports show that the Borough Council left over £8 million of reserves ( savings ) and that the annual budget was balanced for at least the next two years! This comes at a time when many Councils across the country are having to cut services to the public and close down facilities such as swimming pools and libraries. Cllr Ray Russell ( Leader of the Borough Council Liberal Democrat Group ) said ' When people look around the borough and see the many exciting things that have happened under the Liberal Democrat Council and see the health of the Council's finances I hope they will feel that we did a very solid job - particularly as we also had to find £3.2 million of savings to make up for the money lost by
A scheme put in place by the former Liberal Democrat Borough Council is set to benefit 500 Council homes and hopefully many more eventually. The scheme uses money from Council Home rents ( which can only be spent on Counil Home improvements ) to install photo-voltaic panels, which produce electricity from the sun, on the 500 homes. This will mean that those who live in the homes will get a good amount of free electricity every year, while the Borough Council will get money from the government every year for making use of solar electricity - and thus helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissionss. Eventually it is hoped to roll out the scheme to benefit many more Council tenants. The Borough Council is also to fit the panels on several more public buildings - which will save money for all Chesterfield Council Tax payers whilst also help Chesterfield set a good example by doing even more to cut greenhouse gas emissions and make the borough a greener place. Yet another 'green' scheme initiated by the former Libera
Before setting out on the village tour trail on Saturday, I went along to the final Rivercare event of 2011. Rivercare events are run by the Coucil, and are open to anyone to come along and help improve the riverside environment in Bedford. Saturday's 'Green and Arty River Clean Up' concentrated on the area near Aspects and Longholme Way. In addition to the usual litter pick, a mural was also painted in the underpass which links Aspects to the embankment, while the railings were also repainted. My talents were best suited to repainting the railings, as you can see from the photo! It was really enjoyable to work alongside the numerous local volunteers young and old who gave up their Saturday morning to make a positive difference to our shared riverside environment. I want to say thanks once again to all those who came out and got stuck in. They provided an example of real community spirit in action, in common with all of those people across Bedford Borough who take care of their local environment .
Shepway District Council is seeking to appoint four members to its newly established Independent Remuneration Panel.
Liberal Democrats from Hinckley and Bosworth were amongst delegates at the Lib Dem conference who voted to stop plans to time limit support for disabled people. The government has proposed to cut eligibility to Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) to twelve months. Charities like Macmillian that represent cancer patients opposed the plans as the side-effects of cancer and its treatment can be extremely debilitating and many patients need longer than a year to get back to work.
