A group of Liberal Democrat peers have protested outside Parliament - against laws curbing their right to do so. They held a demonstration this morning, before entering the building to debate Baroness Sue Miller's Public Demonstrations (Repeals) Bill, which would repeal the legislation that makes it illegal to protest within 1km of Parliament, without first getting permission from the police. The Bill gained support from Conservative, Labour and crossbench peers, as well as Liberal Democrats, with only the minister speaking against. It passed its second reading and will now be debated in committee.
Local Lib Dem councillors were celebrating this week as representatives of Norfolk County Council agreed to support their long-running campaign for tighter regulation of bus services.
Kent Trading Standards have received information indicating that tarmac gangs are targeting local churches and similar organisations. The usual approach of these gangs is to give a very reasonable quotation before work begins, and to increase the price as the work progresses. When the work is finished, the gang members may behave in an aggressive manner to ensure that payment is made. The quality of the workmanship can be very poor.
Dundee Liberal Democrats announced today (Friday 26th January) that Michael Charlton has been selected as their Scottish Parliamentary candidate for Dundee West.
Birmingham Lib Dem MP John Hemming says that babies are being removed from their parents so that councils can meet adoption targets. Mr Hemming, who has tabled a Commons motion on the issue, said it was a "national scandal". He argued that social services departments are under pressure to meet targets set by government on children in care being adopted.
