If there is a complaint that the West likes to level at China on an ongoing basis, it is that of Human Rights, including that there should be less state control over the press and over freedom of expression. So it should be of interest that there is an inquiry currently under way investigating whether the press in Britain should be more highly controlled, after it appeared that some individuals working at the News of the World had broken the law, intercepting the voicemails of apparently hundreds of individuals including royalty, politicians, sports stars and celebrities, as well as apparently a murder victim, in order to find stories to sell in its newspapers.

In excellent news for users of the free bus pass for older and disabled residents, we are able to confirm that following successful negotiations with commercial bus operators free travel before 9.30am will now continue in Bedford Borough. This is an extra benefit that is on top of the national scheme that only allows free travel 'off peak,' after 9.30am. Prior to becoming Mayor I campaigned with colleagues to establish and protect the best possible scheme for local pensioners and disabled bus users, and now as Mayor I'm delighted that we've been able to protect the local addition to the national scheme and ensure that the free bus pass can be used all day.
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed news that the Network Rail have pleaded guilty to breaching Health & Safety at Work Act over the Cumbrian rail crash at Grayrigg in which one passenger died.
Harry Burfoot, a long standing resident of New Mills and former Councillor, died at his home on 12th February aged 90. During the war he served in the Royal Airforce and met his wife Audrey when posted to Stockport, and they subsequently lived in Hazel Grove.
Residents with a national concessionary bus pass can continue to travel for free on early morning buses following successful negotiations between Bedford Borough Council and bus operators.
