Police in Leicestershire are taking an average of 5 hours to respond to burglary calls, damning new figures uncovered by the Liberal Democrats have revealed.
This is a dramatic 28% increase on response times compared to figures from 2021/22, where it took an average 3 hours to respond to burglaries. Across England, police are taking an average of 9 hours and 8 minutes to show up at the scene when a burglary was reported. This is a 25% increase when compared to the previous year and an 87% increase on burglary response times in 2020/21.
South Leicestershire Liberal Democrats have slammed the Conservative Government for these figures, arguing that years of ineffective resourcing have left local police forces overstretched, under-resourced and unable to effectively respond to local crime.
This includes taking more than 4,500 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) off the streets since 2015.
The Liberal Democrat candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner Ian Sharpe says that "this is a disgraceful state of afairs and wholly at the door of the present PCC Rupert Matthews" His wasteful use of resources and misdirection of funds to silly pet projects has led to our present woeful situation".
The party is calling for a return to proper community policing, where officers are visible, trusted and able to focus on responding to neighbourhood crime like burglaries.
An investigation by the Liberal Democrats has revealed the true costs of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs).
The party has revealed through Freedom of Information requests that PCCs have cost the taxpayer a whopping £102.2 million since 2019. This includes office costs, staff and expenses.

The present Conservative PCC planned to rebrand OUR Police force. Fortunately he was forced to hold a public consultation which overwhelmingly rejected this costly nonsense.

The previous PCC had a plan for Leicestershire to have an extra 100 officers however this was scrapped by the present Conservative PPC.

And worst of all.
The current PCC appointed a controversial consultant 'Mike Veale'. A decision that caused outrage in Parliament. Public pressure resulted in the consultant having to resign.
A disciplinary panel ruled in 2023 that Mike Veale’s behaviour while serving as Chief Constable of Cleveland Police “amounted to gross misconduct” and that had he still be working for the force he would have been sacked.
It was even raised in parliment.
“The contract that Mike Veale has with the Conservative police and crime commissioner in Leicester, under which he has so far been paid £35,000, includes a clause that says that part of his role is to hold the chief constable of Leicestershire to account for implementation of crime strategies. Does the Minister agree that it is totally unacceptable that the chief constable of Leicestershire, with an unblemished record, should answer to someone facing a gross misconduct hearing?”.

All of the above shows that the present Conservative PCC is not fit for the important role of Police and Crime Commissioner in Leicestreshire and Rutland.
